Change is never easy, and anyone who has tried to break a habit or start a new one knows that true transformation doesn’t happen overnight. The Five Stages of Change model, developed in the 1970s by Prochaska and DiClemente, offers a clear framework for understanding the process of personal growth. Initially designed to help smokers quit their addiction, this model applies to all areas of behavioral change—from health and wellness to mindset and career shifts.
Let’s explore these five stages and how they can help you make lasting changes in your own life.
At this stage, you might not yet be aware that a change is needed. Perhaps you’re feeling stuck, but you’re not sure why or what to do about it. This is where self-awareness begins. In coaching, we help you identify hidden blocks, bringing unconscious habits into focus so you can begin to recognise what needs to shift.
2. Contemplation
In this phase, you start to acknowledge that change is necessary, but you’re still unsure about how or when to act. You might weigh the pros and cons of making a change, but fear or uncertainty holds you back. The key here is building clarity and confidence, understanding that change is possible and necessary for your well-being.
3. Preparation
Once you have decided to make a change, the preparation stage is about setting intentions and creating a plan. It is the stage where you start to take small but meaningful steps toward your goals. Whether it’s deciding to attend a retreat, setting new routines, or reaching out for support, this is where momentum builds.
4. Action
In this stage, you’re fully engaged in the process of change. You are beginning to implement new behaviors and working on breaking old patterns. This is often the most challenging phase because it requires persistence, effort, and support. Coaching provides the accountability and guidance needed to navigate this stage with success, ensuring that progress is steady and sustainable.
5. Maintenance
Once you’ve achieved change, the focus shifts to maintaining your new habits and preventing relapse. This stage is crucial because it’s easy to slip back into old behaviors without ongoing support. The coaching relationship then helps you solidify your transformation, ensuring that the changes you’ve made become a natural part of your life, not just temporary fixes.
Understanding these five stages of change allows us to appreciate that transformation is a journey, not a single event. By recognising where you are in the process, you can approach personal growth with patience, intention, and the right support system.
